Contemporary split-level design solution granted planning approval

One Design Architects Ltd. have just gained planning approval for a contemporary rear extension and oriel window addition to a semi-detached house, close to the edge of Baildon Moor. With a Sedum-covered flat roof and sky lights, stone walling and glazed garden doors, this single storey proposal is a sympathetic blend of contemporary and traditional design that will add much needed floor space …. and value … to this Edwardian property.

One Design Architects Ltd. were originally appointed to solve an inherent problem the owners were experiencing with the existing house. The client’s problem was their lack of an open plan kitchen / dining / living space to accommodate their growing family as their house was built on a steeply sloping site and had its main living accommodation located remotely on the floor level above that of their existing kitchen and dining room below. The Architect’s solution was to relocate the main stair, making it a new key design feature linking both levels and, in addition, to add a dynamic rear extension to further increase living space.

From the main entrance hall at upper floor level, guests will now walk down a new spiral staircase into a modern open plan living / dining / kitchen space that flows out into the garden beyond. Having glazed sliding doors, easy patio access and uninterrupted garden views will become the norm for the family and so encourage outdoor living and alfresco dining.
